Tumbleweeds
Apr. 11th, 2020 10:57 amBefore yesterday I'd only been out of the house once since March 25, to visit my isolation buddy. (My mother lives alone and if you do, you're allowed to visit one other person provided there are only one or two people in that household and they're not seeing anyone else. I've been letting her come to me mostly as being on her own she's a lot more antsy in isolation than I am and likes to get out.) I was surprised and concerned then at how much traffic there was on the road. People are allowed out to shop for food, go to the pharmacy and drive a short distance to a park for exercise, and that's it - there seemed more cars out than that would account for.
However, yesterday was Good Friday. New Zealand is not exactly the most religious country in the world (put it this way, in the religion question on the census a significant section of the population identify as Jedi), but for some reason we still close shops on Good Friday and Easter Monday, much to most people's discontent. Because of the coronavirus, supermarkets are opening this year on Easter Sunday, but were still closed yesterday.
And whoa. What a difference. When I went out to visit my mother yesterday, I was the only car on the road. It was really eerie. It was also really encouraging. For people to be sticking so closely to the rules in the middle of a beautiful sunny holiday weekend really makes me hopeful that we're going to get through this sooner rather than later.
