Things are moving pretty fast virus-wise here in New Zealand. Just as I had reluctantly decided not to go out to lunch on Saturday, Stage 2 was declared. As I have autoimmune thyroid disease, that meant me and the over 70s were in lockdown. But it wasn't long before we had company. Cases went over 100 today and as a result, today (Monday) Stage 3 was declared, with Stage 4 to follow in a couple of days, Stage 4 being the serious stuff when everyone goes into lockdown and all but essential businesses are closed.

I'm 100% on board with this. I only wish our borders had been closed earlier. Allowing tourists in and making them promise to self-isolate for 14 days was insane. It was never going to happen. Shutting the borders and declaring a lockdown more quickly could have short-circuited this before it got started. But at least we're doing it faster than some countries.

As for me, I'm totally fine. We work from home anyway, one of our major clients is an essential business and the others are not likely to close during the lockdown either. And I'm not sweating the preparedness part. A few years ago when we had the H1N1 scare, I thought that was a good candidate for a pandemic and I figured out all the necessary steps. That was a false alarm but it sure came in handy for this one. As soon as the coronavirus got out of China I did All The Steps, long before there was any pressure on the shops. We're good for months if need be.

As for the stress that so many people are experiencing, all I can say about that is that if they want to feel better about it they should try having their best friend die just before it all got serious. I pretty much don't give a shit about the pandemic. It's very relaxing.

I am, however, very worried on other people's behalf. All the people who did as requested and shopped normally are suddenly stuck in a situation where supermarkets' delivery slots are all full and there are no Uber Eats-style deliveries either. I really hope this works out better than it seems.
