Well, that's the thing: that's the price I have to pay precisely because I don't want a modern, complicated machine. The brand I'm buying mostly makes commercial washing machines, and their home ones are simple but very sturdy. My blind friend, who is also my housemate, is really looking forward to it as it has dials and she won't have to struggle with an electronic interface. There isn't much of a market in used appliances here, and considering that my repairman told me modern washing machines have a lifespan of only five years, I don't think they would be a good investment in any case. I expect my Speed Queen to last twenty years, which is a significant saving over the cost of four electronic washing machines.
As for the computer hardware, I work in IT and I need the latest technology. I also can't afford to have a machine die on me, which is why I always replace them when they're out of warranty. They're a business expense in any case.
