A Modest Proposal

Pleated-front trousers. Ugh. Not only out of date, but wildly unflattering: they'd make the Chippendales look as if they had beer guts. (And we all know how the laydeez like a flat stomach, since that's the only explanation for the career of Peter Andre.) Yet despite the towering weight of evidence against them, every single New Zealand male seems to insist on wearing little folds of material south of the waistband.

I propose we burn them all. They'd keep the national grid going for at least three months. Now that's what I call alternative energy.

Do guys really wear those? Admittedly, I don't go about looking at men's waist areas, but I don't seem to recall seeing that.

They certainly do round here. Today I was slurping mochaccino and moodily watching Good Kiwi Blokes trooping backwards and forwards to Rebel Sport and Briscoes, pleaty-panted to a man.

(Rebel Sport. Briscoes. Make you feel homesick? No, didn't think so.)

If I'd been feeling homesick, I'm sure that would have fixed it. I haven't felt homesick for ages. You should come and visit Bristol. We could take a day trip to IKEA.

Ooh, yes! I bet it's better than Briscoes. And I could see the love robots! I haven't been anywhere for ages.

I can report that pleats are more comfortable. But I have already independently arrived at the conclusion that they don't look so great, and shall avoid them next time I'm buying trousers. I suspect that pleats would be really good with the right kind of material, one with enough weigh to prevent them unfolding without provocation.

I've arrived at the same point with cuffs. Yes, they do add a little weight to the bottom of the trouser leg that helps keep the material straight. But they look silly.

Men can only get away with cuffs if they're over 6'5". Everyone else looks nastily truncated around the ankles. And they're also mysteriously excellent at picking up dirt. Nothing says style like a rim of grime.
