I can report that pleats are more comfortable. But I have already independently arrived at the conclusion that they don't look so great, and shall avoid them next time I'm buying trousers. I suspect that pleats would be really good with the right kind of material, one with enough weigh to prevent them unfolding without provocation.
I've arrived at the same point with cuffs. Yes, they do add a little weight to the bottom of the trouser leg that helps keep the material straight. But they look silly.
