The entire world is anxiously awaiting the results of the US election, but meanwhile we had our own election to deal with. Fortunately, it wasn't nearly as terror-inducing as the US one, as all the polls showed Jacinda Ardern's Labour Party on track for a comfortable victory.
Polls aren't always accurate these days, as we all remember so bitterly from 2016, but these ones were. The Labour Party won a massive landslide victory and, unusually for us as we have a mixed member proportional voting system that usually results in a coalition government, even won enough seats to govern alone. Well, that's one less thing to worry about.
For me and for many other New Zealanders, this was in essence a single-issue election. New Zealanders are extremely happy with the job Jacinda Ardern's government's done in getting New Zealand through two coronavirus outbreaks with minimum case numbers, minimum loss of life and minimum disruption, and we're incredibly grateful for the three months of normal life between the outbreaks and the return to normal life now. We're more than aware how hard other countries are doing it, and we don't want to put our proven science-led approach at risk.
What happens after Covid is for the entire world a giant question mark, but considering how well we've minimised economic and health damage to New Zealand so far, I'm more than happy to let Jacinda have a go at it. Meanwhile, I'm not the only Kiwi breathing a huge sigh of relief tonight that we haven't jeopardised our chances of getting through this thing the the way we started it.
