Why The Tide Table Is My Friend

I have two passports, and between them they allow me residency in almost thirty countries. And occasionally I take advantage of that, but mostly I choose to stay here in Auckland. Because only in Auckland can I on a summer weekday zip out for a lunchtime swim here:

And when I get there, not only do I not get nibbled by sharks or get poisoned by stonefish as my Aussie cousins do, I have the beach, and the Pacific, pretty much to myself.

Going back to work with wet hair and a trace of sand between my toes: priceless.

That's beautiful.

Oh, the depression of being a landlocked state!

We're ridiculously lucky in Auckland when it comes to beaches - you're never more than fifteen minutes away from one, and even the inner-city beaches (what a strange-looking phrase) are perfectly swimmable. Do you have compensatory pretty lakes?

Inner-city beaches, inner-city pressure.

Oh, we've got loads of lakes. Boatloads, actually. Boatloads of boatloads of lakes. You can't walk out your front door without stepping in one.

How moist.
