Someone I know locally has lots of relatives in Louisiana and she says she's pretty much stopped posting about anything she's doing on Facebook. I'm not on Facebook, but still, I know the feeling. Any innocent mention of basic daily activities like going to cafes etc, not to mention a friend's upcoming party to which she's invited more than 60 people, basically feels like you're just rubbing other countries' noses in it. If it's any help, we do fully appreciate how lucky we are and how hard other countries are doing it while we get on with normal life.

You'd think NZ's return to normal would be a good news story, but of course there isn't a single situation that Trumpers can't twist to their own ends. I was surprised to read a breathless account today on Twitter of how people in NZ will be trapped in quarantine for months or years and it's so terrible that people are breaking out. Um, no. Quarantine at the border here as a system may well continue for months or years, but individuals are only quarantined for 14 days, all expenses paid in a 4 or 5 star hotel. As for the breakouts, yes, they're right, that's not fake news. Only it's not quite the horror movie scenario they're portraying. Out of more than 30,000 people passing through quarantine, we've had a handful of idiots breaking out. One went to buy a bunch of alcohol. One wanted a craft beer they didn't have at the hotel. One wandered around a supermarket, bought a razor and took selfies of himself in the aisles. All went back to their rooms. Not exactly internment camp territory, but by all means, American idiots refusing to wear masks or protect themselves and others, do delude yourselves about our totalitarian nightmare.
