You Where?

I've been to a reasonable number of places: some that everyone's been to (like Paris), some less so (like Smolensk). But never before have I had the experience I'm having now when I tell people I'm going to Botswana.

Staring. Jaw-hanging. General gobsmackery. You'd think I'd announced I was about to take off for Alpha Centauri.

I don't get it. Why is Botswana so unlikely? Hasn't anyone read Alexander McCall Smith?

I can't see why Botswana would be unlikely. People might think it unlikely if I was to say I was going to Botswana, but that's because I never go anywhere very exciting. But I wouldn't bat an eyelid to hear that lots of people I know were going to Botswana, I'm sure. Well, unless they all went together all at once; then I might suspect something odd was going on.

Especially if they hadn't invited you. I think someone I worked with lived in Botswana for a bit. Or it might have been somewhere else.
