What's the most loathsome Christmas song? There's so much choice, I keep changing my mind. For a long time Feliz Navidad was in the number one spot: don't know why it grates on me quite so much when there are more obvious candidates, but there you are. I want to rip Jose Feliciano's head off and that's that. In the end, though, I don't think I can ignore the claims of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas any longer. Although the Bing Crosby/Davie Bowie version did win points for sheer strangeness.

Anything featuring Cliff Richard, surely?

Argh! I'd totally forgotten him! Children singing Chris-tee-an rhymes! Yes, that's definitely worse than Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas or the hapless Jose.

I think the reason I didn't think about Cliff is that, as I was pondering the other day, we hear many more American Christmas songs in NZ than English ones. You hear Slade on high rotate in the UK every year yet I've rarely heard it here.

Snoopy's Christmas is a bit annoying.

I must admit that "Then the Baron cried out 'Merry Christmas, my friend!'" invariably makes me sob like a girl.

I don't hate it as much as you do, but I do put into the category of snow-fixated songs that's totally inappropriate for New Zealand. No, I am not walking in a winter wonderland. Nor am I dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh or indeed any other conveyance.

Wham's "Last Christmas" - but I'm especially prejudiced by my experience of repeatedly watching the video two nights in a row over dinner at the charming Travelodge Docklands. George Michael's hair was terrifying and Andrew Ridgeley's pout profoundly incredible.
