A Bit Of An Overreaction

We're currently doing some work for Famous German Company, and I was telling a Germany-based client yesterday that New Zealand had gone into severe lockdown. "For one case?" he said. "Isn't that a bit of an overreaction?"

And he's not the only one. The world media had picked up on the "one case" story overnight as well.

I don't get this line of thinking at all. How long do they want us to wait? Until it's completely out of control? We can't afford to do that. The reason we pursued the elimination strategy in the first place is that New Zealand is stretched for ICU beds as it is. We can't handle a massive surge in demand for them.

I don't get the "one case" thing either. This is Delta. It's never "one case". Overnight testing has already turned up another four, and it's looking like it may well be much, much worse than that. The original case had been socialising in a pub with at least eighty people in it in a country town over the weekend. Others there were also tourists who have now gone home, taking their potential infection with them. One of the overnight cases is a hospital nurse. Another is a teacher. Neither were symptomatic (although of course they were infectious). Even worse, no link has yet been established between the original case and the border, so we have no idea yet who the missing links are. We could well be on the cusp of a major outbreak. But sure, yeah, guys, let's sit around and wait to see how bad it gets before we do something about it.
